Assignment: Stage One: UBD Template
50 Points
The Understanding by Design text does a good job of explaining the philosophy behind Stage One. The primary concept to understand I'd like you to understand follows:
We can't possibly teach everything related to every standard in our curriculum.
We should focus on big ideas or "concepts" as we plan curriculum. Starting with standards, and outlining important, real-world questions to focus our instruction helps us to focus our instruction on the concepts that matter. We'd like to allow students to explore what they know about the information they must master. As much as is possible, we'd like students to learn through discovery and exploration. And it is vital that we address the eternal question: Why do I have to know this? The essential questions should help students understand why they have to know the curriculum we are teaching.

Assignment Two is assessed using the following criteria:
Standards are derived from the Alaska Content Standards and ISTE NETS for Students. 20 points
Essential Questions and Essential Understandings have real-world relevance. They answer the question "why must I learn this information" in kid-friendly language. EQs and EUs are related to the standards. Essential Questions and Understandings target the most relevant concepts related to the standards. 20 points
What students will know and be able to do: Targeted knowledge and skills are measurable, and align well with targeted standards. 10 points
