Thank you everyone for the comments! I can't wait to try this unit in the fall with my students. I have used the Graffiti Wall before in lessons and my students love it. I have done it on the SmartBoard and on a whiteboard. The SmartBoard makes it easier to save the work the students have recorded.

Money units seem motivating to students and your unit will certainly be of great interest to the students. I appreciate how you plan to make sure the students understand how they can use their mathematics skills directly with this topic. I love the self-assessment you designed, as a checklist directly related to the standards. I’ve known teachers who have done this themselves; however, giving students this accountability is a great idea. The graffiti wall does seem like a nice way to activate prior knowledge from the previous day’s lesson. Everything is very well organized.

Great job, Hallie! Your presentation was full of information. I could tell that your Unit Plan was well thought out and organized. In your Stage 1, it is great how your need-to-know and understandings tie to your standards. I especially liked your transfer goal. It is a great way to show your students how money is important in their everyday lives. Your Stage 2 assessments are also well organized. I especially liked how you have given your students a choice of which technology to use - i.e. wiki or globster - according to their ability level. This is an awesome example of differentiation. You have many different types of assessments listed under other evidence. Also important is the feedback that you are giving to your students so that they know if they are on the right track and what to do if they are not. This is so important with students of a young age. I like how you are giving a self-assessment at the beginning and end of the course. This gives the students an idea of what they are working towards and what they need to get there - and then at the end they will be able to see how much they have learned. As you went through your Stage 3 lesson activities, I thought it was great how you discussed your student expectations with your students. Students produce much better work when they know what is expected of them and when they are given a choice of how they can produce that work. Good luck with your unit.

Hallie, the unit plan that you present is a wonderful representation of Guided Discovery and Gradual Release (I do, we do, you do model.) I use these in my first grade classroom and I have found that using this model for instruction benefits students' learning and retention of information. I really enjoyed that you have students put money to work through the mock store and each having the opportunity to make purchases or be the cashier. This real world application in a controlled setting helps students to understand the importance of money as well as applying the uses of money in a safe place. The self assessment that you did before instruction and after instruction is a great idea! I am planning on using more self assessments like this in my classroom. I love that the students can see what they will be working on and assess their knowledge on the topic before and after instruction. It gives the teacher a good look at what they may already know and what they may need reteaching on after the unit. I really love that idea and thought the overall organization of the unit was a great way to set up an introduction to money and assess student learning in a hands-on way.

Good job, Carrollea! Your presentation was organized, clear and easy to follow. It flowed really nice. I like the organization of your Unit Plan. It seems like your students will be really busy covering some very important concepts in a week. I especially liked that your final project is an e-portfolio that is an ongoing log of their departures. It is important for your students to understand that what they learn in this one week is something that they will be using everyday. Every departure is a great way to assess their proficiency and efficiency.

I like how one of your areas of focus is "collaboration". I like that, because with limited time in my classroom having meaningful collaborative projects is difficult. We barely have enough time for the independent projects, but seeing how you have designed your unit I can see how I could get my students to create a project such as yours. The rumor is our district is moving to all Apple products soon so it would be easy for students to have access to the resources needed to create a presentation.

Great job, Nicole! This seems like a very engaging unit and something different then I have done before. It takes writing one step further and looks like it can get students excited about writing. I have never used Garage Band before, but it looks like a great tool to use in the classroom. Thank you, for demonstrating how to use it. Also, I like how you used goals that encourage students to work with others. I think this is very important because working in groups or with others is something that individuals do on a daily basis in their jobs. So, it is something we should get students use to at an early age. Great presentation. Thank you again.

Thomas, I love your line that "group work should be better than work done as individuals". This is an idea I have never made transparent to students, but I will this year. When we do group work it can so easily become more about socializing and less about really having each member of the group add their strength to make a superior product.

Thomas- Your presentation was very engaging. I appreciate the video at the beginning as I wasn’t exactly sure what a stop motion film was. Your unit had many different activities that my students would be very engaged in. I like how you had students do one step at a time. This is very important in my classroom where I work with students with special needs because they often get overwhelmed when too much is given to them at once. Also, thank you for the demonstration at the end of the video it was very helpful in beginning to learn how to create these kinds of film. Great job!

Also as I watched the video I was very excited to think about how this could be implemented into my own classroom. I just was transferred to an 8th-9th grade English and Reading position and I am excited to try using the ideas you presented to help engage my students. The organization of your unit was very clear and straight-forward. This made it understandable for someone to pick up and know exactly what was expected of the students and where the unit was heading. Very well thought-through! Thank you for a great presentation.

Good job, Dan! Your presentation was very informative and organized. I like how you gave us a background introduction into yourself, your school and your students. I also teach in a village from the same district as yourself (Newtok - LKSD) and I could instantly visualize your story. I also understood the importance of your Unit Plan. I find that so many of the youth in our villages are losing touch with their culture and this unit will be a great way for them to reconnect with their families and elders. I love how your students are using so many different technologies to create their unit presentations. I also like how you are going to introduce all of these technologies to these students so that they understand how to use them. I think it is a great idea to create the presentation using iPads. Your students will definitely enjoy this unit and the design of the presentation. I especially like how you plan to invite "story tellers" into the classroom to share their past cultures and how things have changed with the students. It is important for the students to be able to hear these stories, and some students might not have an elder available to them to interview. This gives all of the students the same opportunities to create great presentations using elders as a source of information. Really, who knows more about how far the village has come than the elders. Good luck with your presentations :)

I felt like I was always playing catch up with the Land In Motion Book, with too little time and resources to teach. I really appreciated the check lists you have in place to help keep everyone on track, as well as a tangible/visual project as a culminating activity. I like it when students have something to show for their work.

Thank you for starting with such a detailed description of your students and overall goals of the class. Creating a wiki based on content is a nice project and I appreciate your reflections on what didn’t work when you tried it last time. The checklist you’ve since created and the roles should make it much clearer for what the students need to do. Thanks also for showing examples of the software the students will be interacting with. I’ve used Moodle in a very basic way, so I wasn’t aware of the tests and reflections portion. Looks like a very interesting unit—a class that I would’ve enjoyed as a student!

Amber I really like the topic for your unit. Having students compare different Alaskan Native groups and identifying the regions they live is very beneficial. Students’ presenting their findings to another school is a great way to practice public speaking skills, which is a common core standard. Venn diagrams are nice organizers that help students visualize the differences and similarities between the two groups. Your rubrics were very thorough and included many things to be assessed. Conducting a pretest will be a good way to find out the knowledge students have regarding the different groups in Alaska. You included lots of ways that student will use technology and I am sure they are going to be thrilled to start this activity! Good job!

Thank you Adele, I am a little nervous and excited at the same time about teaching over the video conference. Being from the region I have known the students for years, as well as their families and am most excited about getting to see the students more on a regular basis. What I am most nervous about is the classroom management over video, keeping them engaged and interested. As for the students attending the Wednesday meeting yes, it would be available via Skype. It seems to be the best method in our sites to video chat because of the delay due to bandwidth. Elders come and present or tell stories over video conferencing all the time, its very fun and students are very respectful when it comes to elders speaking (for the most part). We also do virtual pizza parties, Halloween parades, Christmas Holiday Programs, and other events with all schools throughout our district as well. The kids have a lot of fun

I really enjoyed hearing about the project you’ll be doing with your students—it will be very engaging for the students and has a lot of value to it as well. I felt that your unit does a nice job of scaffolding the skills by having students first analyze published short stories before trying to write one themselves. With group work, I always wonder how to know for sure if everyone was contributing and how much mastery each child really has in regards to the standards. I do like the I-You-We Checklist you use to help establish what each student has accomplished. I also like how you organized the WHERETO acronym. It brought more clarity to the unit in this way. Thank you for sharing this.

I really enjoyed this unit, I could've used something like this for this last school year, I really liked that you incorporated behavior and conflict in your instruction. Setting the tone for the school year and the climate of the classroom is so important. Students need to have the tools to resolve conflict and I think that using technology to demonstrate resolving conflict is a great way to have students begin working together to make something that gives them ownership in the classroom environment. I enjoyed seeing something that could be used to show parents what their students have decided for their own behavior. Having a premier night/day is a great way to have the students show their parents their finished products as well as encourage positive behaviors through conflict resolution. Thank you Donna!

Not the best unit but it is a start. I need to work with a local expert here to help me with some lesson plan ideas. This is the second unit I started for the class because my first one was WAY TO BIG. I had 20+ objectives. So I went to another unit that I thought was smaller. I also go way to big and have to tailor back. So I went with my second favorite unit topic. I hope you enjoy.
